Forty-two

LAO TZU:

Out of Tao comes the One,

out of one come two,

out of two: three.

From three all things come.

SHAKESPEARE:

Why railest thou on thy birth? the heaven and earth?

Since birth, and heaven, and earth, all three do meet

In thee at once.

Friar Laurence, Romeo and Juliet, act III, scene iii

Berowne: White-handed mistress, one sweet word with thee.

Princess: Honey, and milk, and sugar—there is three.

Love’s Labor’s Lost, act V, scene ii

COMMENT: The number three seems to be significant in most world philosophies and religions. Joseph Campbell explains a Hindu origin myth this way: after an eternity, the All wanted to know itself, so it split in two; those two became parents of a third, and from that third all things came into existence. Most religious mythologies have a father, mother, and child trinity, though some refer to a father, a son, and a holy spirit. It’s also worth noting that in all early human counting systems there was a 1-2-3 pattern, but it actually meant “one, two, many.” In other words, early human beings had words for one and two, but after that, the number was unlimited.
